Tire smoke, cool cars, and extreme sideways action was the order of the day in the season opener of the 2009 Glade Sport Lateral Drift Championship at the Greenhills Promenade Open Parking Lot in the City of San Juan. Many of the competitors for the pro-series came prepared with new cars, and new setups. New graduates from the recently held Drift Underground amateur series also came to play with the pros. Drifting is one of the fastest growing high intensity motorsport events today. Its popularity has gained greatly due to the movie The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift and the Japanese Anime series Initial D. And with the organization of the professional drift competitions such as the D1 GP Championships and Formula Drift, the sport has truly gone through great heights from its grassroots beginnings with street racers drifting in mountain passes in Japan during late nights.
